Magnitude 5.3 quake hits DavOcc

A magnitude 5.3 earthquake hit Davao Occidental early Wednesday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

The tectonic quake struck 175 km. southeast of the municipality of Jose Abad Santos at 4:26 a.m., with a depth of 94 km.

Instrumental intensity II was recorded in General Santos City and Kiamba, Sarangani.

Instrumental intensity is gauged using an intensity meter that measures ground acceleration, compared to the reported intensity, which is the traditional way of knowing the intensity based on reports by people who felt the earthquake.

Meanwhile, Phivolcs said aftershocks are possible but the damage is not expected from the magnitude 5.3 tremor.

Damage starts at intensity VI based on Phivolcs’ scale.
