MANILA-- Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II on Wednesday ordered the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to probe the killing of the assistant provincial prosecutor of Rizal.
Aguirre issued Department Order No.489 directing NBI Director Dante Gierran to conduct a probe and case build-up on the death of Rizal Assistant Provincial Prosecutor Maria S. Ronatay, who was ambushed and gunned down by riding-in-tandem on Tuesday.
Aguirre branded Ronatay's killing as bastardly and evil.
We need to bring the perpetrators to justice, Aguirre said in a statement.
Aguirre also vowed to avail of all possible means to assist prosecutors in expeditiously obtaining permits to carry firearms in light of the incident.
On behalf of the DOJ family, I offer our solemn condolences to the family of Prosecutor Ronatay. In addition, our prosecutors cannot be hapless sitting ducks. We should also take a very serious look at possible ways and means to assist our prosecutors obtain licenses to carry firearms as an additional protective measure, Aguirre added.
Police investigators said Ronatay,was onboard her Honda CRV when she was ambushed by two armed men along Ortigas Extension in Barangay San Isidro.
Ronatay is the fifth prosecutor attacked since October 2016.
In February, Caloocan City Prosecutor Diosdado Azarcon is the fourth prosecutor, who was shot thrice in the head by a motorcycle riding gunman outside his house along Brgy 63 Kapas St., in Caloocan on Monday morning while he was on his way to work..
In February, Surigao City prosecutor Manuel Tesiorna is the third prosecutor attacked. On Jan. 11, Quezon City Prosecutor Noel Mingoa was shot at close range while outside a restaurant along Commonwealth Avenue. Mati City Prosecutor Rolando Acido was shot to death outside Mati City Hall of Justice last Oct. 26, 2016.
