Births in Italy plummet further

ROME: ISTAT said Monday Italy’s birth rate has declined even further, with the number of newborns registered here dropping to 400,249 in 2021, down by 4,643 (1.1 percent) with respect to the previous year.

The national statistics agency said the figures for this year look set to be ever worse.

It said provisional data for January to September show that births were down by around 6,000 compared to the same period in 2021.

The average number of children per woman in Italy was 1.25 last year, up slightly from 1.24 in 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic was at its peak.

The average for the 2008-2010 period was 1.44 children per woman.
