Gov’t on top of Leyte quake disaster response – DILG

MANILA-- Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Officer-in-Charge Catalino Cuy is assuring victims of the magnitude 6.5 earthquake that hit Leyte and nearby provinces last July 6 that the government is rallying all its resources for their aid.

"We are with you. In the aftermath of the Leyte earthquake, the government is on top of efforts to address all the urgent needs of the victims, and we will stand with you until you regain your normal lives back," Cuy said in a statement on Wednesday.

Cuy noted that around two weeks after the earthquake, various agencies of the government are still on their toes to make certain that all of the immediate needs of the victims are provided for.

He said the DILG and its attached agencies such as the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) are on the ground extending all assistance to the victims and doing the rounds to assure that ongoing monitoring and coordination are in place.

Immediately after the earthquake, Cuy said, the DILG rallied its regional counterparts to closely monitor the extent of the damage caused by the earthquake.

The PNP also directed the uniformed personnel of the Regional Public Safety Battalion of Region 8 to deploy its men for search and rescue operations in areas where the damage is quite considerable due to the earthquake.

PNP personnel also aided Region 8 in securing vital installations in public and private establishments to prevent accidents such as electrocution and fire, and provided security for very important persons (VIPs), multinational and local humanitarian agencies.

On the other hand, the BFP rendered immediate response as duty detailed officer to ensure seamless coordination among member-agencies of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.
