CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY-- Imprisoned Iligan City Mayor Celso Regencia was released from detention Monday morning on orders of the Regional Trial Court (RTC) in Quezon City.
Regencia was detained on charges of multiple murder and frustrated murder in connection with the attempted slaying of Rep. Varf Belmonte who was ambushed on his way home a few kilometers from the Laguindingan airport in 2014.
Belmonte survived but his three bodyguards, including an enlisted police officer, was killed in the ambuscade.
The RTC dismissed the charges after the court found out that the witness was not credible and that the arresting police officers recanted their testimonies and admitted to having planted the evidence against Regencia.
Regencia attended the flag raising ceremony Monday morning to the surprise and delight of the City Hall employees who was unaware of his release. (PNA)
