Iloilo City gov’t destroys 157 modified mufflers

The city government here destroyed 157 modified mufflers during a ceremonial destruction using a roller compactor in front of the Dinagyang grandstand Friday. City Regulation Ordinance 071 or the Iloilo City Anti-Muffler Ordinance prohibits modified mufflers in motorcycles that emit excessive loud noise. An intensified campaign began in March and led to the confiscation of 157 modified mufflers. The ordinance mandated that the allowable sound level for motorcycles should be 99 decibels at an engine speed of 2,000 to 2,500 revolutions per minute. 'We will continue with our operations as long as there are violators,' Iloilo City Traffic Management Unit head Uldarico Garbanzos said in an interview. He said they will combine their operations with the Iloilo City Police Office and the Public Safety and Transportation Management Office. The destroyed exhausts will be endorsed to the concerned offices of the city government for proper disposal. To sustain the campaign, Garbanzos said the Business Permits Lic ensing Office has inspected nine establishments sealing modified mufflers. The city government will purchase more decibel meters in addition to eight units. 'We do not tolerate these modified mufflers causing disturbance, especially at nighttime. There are a lot of complaints,' Mayor Jerry P. Treñas said in an interview. Source: Philippines News Agency
