Iloilo City opens sidewalk to vendors this holiday season

ILOILO CITY :  The city government will temporarily allow vendors to occupy designated sidewalk areas to sell their merchandise to give them the opportunity to earn and give the public a wide array of choices while shopping this holiday season.

Jeck Conlu, head of the Public Safety and Transportation Management Office (PSTMO), said that as of Tuesday, 259 sidewalk vendors have applied for a special permit but the number is expected to increase in the next weeks.

“Every year we always open the sidewalk for our vendors except during the pandemic,” he said in an interview on Tuesday.

Executive Order 106-A, signed by Mayor Jerry Treñas on Dec. 12, identified areas that will be allowed for open sidewalk vending that include Iznart Street, from Po’s marketing to Jollibee Iznart; J.M. Basa Street, from Socorro to Washington; Ledesma Street, from Unitop to the corner of FandC Pawnshop; and Delgado Street, from corner Merczi to Iloilo Supermart.

Vendors can also position their merchandise in front of the SM Savemore at the Pious XII side to the Montinola Mansion and outside the perimeter of Jaro Plaza, across the Evangelical Church, except the area in Ledi Supermart in Jaro district, Jocsin Street and Katilingban (M.H. Del Pilar Street) in Molo district, and De Leon Street in front of the Mandurriao Police Station in Mandurriao district.

“They have to secure a special permit and be ready with their vaccination cards. They should post a no and ensure the management of their garbage,” Conlu added.

He added that the vendors will be monitored by the Special Services Division to make sure that they follow the guidelines and don’t sell fireworks.

They need to vacate the area after Dec. 31.
