Negotiations lead to surrender of 2 NPA rebels in Surigao Sur

A vice team leader and a member of the communist New People’s Army (NPA) have surrendered to the intelligence unit of the Surigao del Sur Police Provincial Office after weeks of negotiations.

In a statement Saturday, Brig. Gen. Romeo Caramat Jr., director of the Police Regional Office 13 (Caraga), commended the unyielding efforts of the provincial police in the negotiations that convinced the two young rebels to finally abandon “the decaying cause of the NPA.”

Caramat identified the two as alias Rolex, 22, the vice team leader of Kaloy Squad 1, Platoon 1, Sub-Regional Sentro de Grabidad Westland, Guerrilla Front 22 (GFC 22); and alias Clinton, 21, an element of Squad 2, GFC 22.

The duo also handed over to authorities an improvised shotgun and a .22 caliber revolver during their surrender on Thursday.

“The increasing number of surrenders and the neutralization of their leaders, members, and supporters have brought significant losses to the terrorist group,” Caramat said.

He said the continuing aggressive efforts of the Philippine National Police and the Armed Forces of the Philippines against terrorism would certainly end the NPA movement in the region.

“We also recognize the support of the different line agencies and the communities in this unified fight to end the local communist armed conflict,” Caramat said.

The two surrenderers are undergoing debriefing and processing for their enrolment in the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program of the government.
