NU stuns reigning champion FEU in UAAP junior basketball opener

Nazareth School of National University (NU) pulled off a 70-56 upset over defending champion Far Eastern University-Diliman (FEU) at the start of the UAAP Season 86 high school boys' basketball tournament at the Amoranto Sports Complex in Quezon City on Tuesday. Colins Akowe scored 17 on top of 21 rebounds and had three blocks and two assists for the Bulldogs, who posted a 55-41 lead at the end of the third quarter. Mac-Mac Alfanta chipped in 14 points, three rebounds, two steals and two assists while Prince Barraca had 11 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals. Jedric Daa paced the Tamaraws with 11 points and six rebounds while Liam Salangsang added 10 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Meanwhile, Ateneo de Manila University outplayed University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS), 93-86. Ziv Espinas led the Blue Eagles with 19 points, 15 rebounds and six assists followed by Third Ebdane (17 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals) and Kris Porter ( 15 points and 12 rebounds). Daryl Valdeavilla had 30 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals for the Fighting Maroons. Bruce Tubongbanua contributed 20 points, four rebounds and three assists, while Rocco Melicor added 16 points and three assists. De La Salle-Zobel also won its opening games against University of the East, 79-76. Keiffer Alas delivered 32 points, 15 rebounds, five assists and two steals to lead the Green Archers, who trailed 35-41 at halftime. Charles Dimaano made 11 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals while Waki Espina had 10 points, six rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Lance Sabroso and Kristoper Lagat scored 16 points each while John Edry Alejandro chipped in 10 points for the Red Warriors, who posted a 22-11 advantage at the end of the first half.
