PDRRMO in Pangasinan now on blue alert for ‘Nina’, Christmas

The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) is now on blue alert starting today (December 23) in preparation for the coming of tropical storm Nina and also to be able to respond immediately in case accidents arise in any part of Pangasinan during the Yuletide season.

This is in compliance with the memorandum of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) in Region 1 and in line with Oplan:' "Kapaskuhan", said Avenix Arenas, PDRRMO spokesperson.

Assuring their readiness in case Typhoon Nina will hit the province on Christmas Day, Arenas said PDRRMO has already posted its Water Seach and Rescue (WASAR) team in the Lingayen Beach, noting that it is now being frequented by vacationers from Manila who want to swim despite the chilly December weather.

The WASAR team will stay in the beach until 6:30 p.m.

A mobile medical clinic was also deployed at the beach to assist beachcombers who may meet a freak accident or become victims of jellyfish sting.

In all other coastal areas of Pangasinan, the Philippine Navy, Coast Guard and PNP Maritime Police, may be called to help.

At the Lingayen Beach, no swimming will be allowed past 6:00 p.m.

Meanwhile, the police in Pangasinan will implement "Oplan: Ligtas Pasko" to ensure that no untoward incident will happen in the streets, church, malls, bus stations and other places of convergence.

Supt. Jackie Candelario, police deputy provincial director for operations, said the policemen will also secure streets and communities, knowing that many people will leave their homes when they go to church.

He said the contingency force sent by the PNP regional office had been deployed this Christmas to Dagupan and Urdaneta cities, while the Philippine Army contingents were already in the province even months before, he added.

The other police stations were beefed up by force multipliers, which include members of communication groups and barangay tanods or village watchmen.

No untoward incident has so far been noted in Pangasinan this Yuletide season, said Candelario.
