About half of the 15,000 Selangor police officers and personnel will be on duty during the coming state election, Selangor Police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said today.
He said efforts had been taken since last month to train the selected police officers and personnel.
Assistance would be sought also from the police in states not having elections, he told reporters after the Training of Trainers Programme of the Selangor Police Campaign to Combat Domestic Violence, at the Selangor Police headquarters.
State elections are to be held soon in Penang, Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan.
Hussein said the election hotspots had been identified and would be made public soon.
On the campaign to combat domestic violence, Hussein cited the main factors for domestic violence in Selangor as disagreements between couples, pressure at work and financial problems.
Quoting statistics, he said 944 cases were reported in 2020, some 1,713 in 2021, some 1,284 in 2022 and 423 up to April this year, with some resulting in deaths as well.
"A large number of domestic violence cases was reported in the police administrative districts of Petaling Jaya, Gombak, Hulu Selangor and Kajang," he said.
However, Hussein explained that though the statistics showed an increasing trend, this did not reflect Selangor as one of the states with the highest incidence of domestic violence due to its large population.
He said one of the reasons for the increase in cases was the awareness of the community to report to the authorities the occurrence of domestic violence.
"Many awareness campaigns carried out by the government and non-governmental organisations are among the factors for individuals to come forward to make police reports and for appropriate action and investigation being taken under the Domestic Violence Act 1994," he said.
