Senators back probe on overstocking of supplies

MANILA-- The decision of Senate Pres. Aquilino Pimentel III to conduct a probe into the reported overstocking of office supplies in the Senate was backed by two senators on Wednesday.

Senate Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III said the case should be referred to the Senate Committee on Accounts chaired by Sen. Panfilo Lacson.

In a separate press conference, Sen. Joseph Victor Ejercito said that he is also supportive of the Senate President's decision to look into the report.

It may be recalled that the newly-released 2016 annual audit report of the Commission on Audit (COA) showed that over 70 office supplies found in the Senate's stock rooms were an excess of what was needed.

These supplies include batteries, envelopes, fasteners, folders, masking tape, markers, toilet paper among other office supplies.

Out of the total inventories for CY (Calendar Year) 2016, excess stocks for 73 inventory items valued at PHP1.403 million was observed, COA said in a statement.

In his official Twitter account, Lacson earlier joked about how impossible it is for that much toilet paper to be consumed by senators.

Even if all senators, staff and employees defecate three times a day, no way we can consume that. Someone has to be jailed, Lacson said.
