Magnitude 5.1 quake jolts Occidental Mindoro

General

A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck Occidental Mindoro on Tuesday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

This was an aftershock of the magnitude 5.3 earthquake in Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro last October 3, it added.

The tectonic quake’s epicenter on Tuesday was 15 kilometers northeast of Sablayan town and was recorded at 12:08 p.m.

It had a depth of 15 kilometers.

Intensity IV was felt in Sablayan and Rizal, Occidental Mindoro; while intensity III was reported in Abra De Ilog, Santa Cruz and Calintaan, Occidental Mindoro; Calapan City and Bansud, Oriental Mindoro.

Intensity II was felt in Makati City; Batangas City; Baco, Oriental Mindoro; and intensity I in Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro; and Tingloy, Batangas.

Reported intensity is the traditional way of knowing the intensity based on reports of people who felt the earthquake.

On the other hand, the following instrumental intensities were measured using an intensity meter that measures ground acceleration.

Intensity IV – Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro

Intensity III – Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro

Intensity II – Roxas, Oriental Mindoro; San Jose, Occidental Mindoro; Batangas City

Intensity I – Tagaytay City, Cavite; Mulanay, Mauban, Gumaca and Dolores, Quezon

Even if damage starts at Intensity VI based on the Phivolcs’ scale, it said damage is likely from Tuesday’s earthquake.

“The reported intensity of IV is in Calapan Oriental Mindoro, but the epicenter is in Sablayan Occidental Mindoro where the intensity can be higher,” Phivolcs director Renato Solidum, Jr. said.
