A total of 61 students from San Remigio town have enrolled at the Department of Education (DepEd) Schools Division of Antique first-ever farm school to be opened in the province.
Evelyn Remo, DepEd Antique School Governance and Operations Division chief, said Tuesday the students are new graduates of the Aningalan Central School and the neighboring villages of San Remigio.
“The students, who have enrolled, will be in their Grade 7 by this coming school year,” she said.
Officials expect more learners to be interested in the farm school, which is open to accepting enrollees outside Aningalan.
The school will offer regular subjects such as Math and Science but agriculture courses such as planting of high-value crops and marketing of products will be added, Remo said.
San Remigio Mayor Margarito Mission Jr, in a separate interview, said the local government unit (LGU) is assisting the DepEd for the farm school to be realized.
“This coming school opening the students enrolled at the farm school will initially have their classes at the Aningalan Central School, but the LGU will be putting up a farm school eventually,” he said.
The LGU is initially allocating PHP300,000 for the farm school to be put up within the year in Aningalan, Mission added.
Aningalan, an upland village, is an ideal site for the farm school due to its suitable climate for planting high-value crops like cauliflowers, cabbage, and other vegetables.
“Students if taught to produce agricultural products could already earn income even while in school,” he said.
The establishment of the farm school was an idea of the DepEd Western Visayas regional director Ramir Uytico when he visited Aningalan last February and saw the area’s potential for cultivation of high-value crops given its cool climate.
