PDP-Laban petition to be referred to Comelec en banc: Jimenez

The petition filed by the ruling party Partido Demokratiko Pilipino–Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) will be referred to the Commission on Elections (Comelec) en banc, the poll body said on Tuesday.

Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez said the petition filed by the group of Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi will be discussed by the seven-man panel of the Commission.

“Last December 31, the Cusi-led PDP-Laban wing submitted a petition to reopen the period of filing of certificates of candidacy (COCs). So how will that be treated? That will be referred to the en banc and the en banc will make the determination whether or not that’s something they would like to allow,” he said in a virtual press briefing.

Jimenez added that it is possible that the matter will be tackled on Wednesday.

“At this point, it is being readied the referral to the Commission en banc. It is very likely that it will be taken up by the en banc tomorrow. So, after the en banc tomorrow, we should have some information as to whether or not…on what will happen on this motion,” he said.

He added that everyone is waiting on what will happen next on the case.

“We will see what happens. It’s a little tricky because there are a lot of issues involved in it. There’s a lot of consequences to opening up the COC filing once again,” Jimenez said

“Just apart from the whole unexpectedness of this request and the unprecedented nature of the request, there are a whole lot of issues involved. So, we will see,” he added.
