The provincial government of South Cotabato has honored 1,350 individuals and 11 groups that have been on the frontline to fight against the coronavirus disease 20219 (Covid-19) in the province since 2020.

Dr. Rogelio Aturdido Jr., provincial health office chief and one of the awardees, said Wednesday those given awards were 991 public health workers, 359 personnel under the support unit, and 11 groups that have exposed themselves to health risk and hardship in the line of duty.

“They are all heroes in the fight against Covid-19,” he said in a statement, adding that the awarding ceremony took place Tuesday at the provincial capitol grounds attended only by department heads and representatives from partner offices.

Aturdido said the “Covid-19 heroes” included medical and other necessary personnel assigned in hospitals, isolation, and other health care facilities, those serving in the identified transport isolation and treatment facilities, and groups of individuals in the provincial government who have served as support staff in the fight against the disease.

The awardees who received plaques of recognition and tokens are frontline health workers in government-run hospitals and other health facilities in the province, he said.

Aturdido said while he was thankful for the recognition the “heroes” received, they wanted the pandemic to stop.

“We hope that the giving of the same commendation will stop because we want this pandemic to end,” he said.

He also appealed to the public to adhere to the minimum health protocols of the government to help curb the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Please change your behavior towards this pandemic, let us practice the minimum health standard, be vaccinated, and end this pandemic together,” Aturdido said.

He said with the anticipated surge due to the Omicron variant, he hopes that everybody would take extra care, including employees of the provincial government.
