9 Zambo students qualify for DOST scholarship grant

ZAMBOANGA CITY – The Department of Science and Technology (DOST), through the Science Education Institute (SEI), announced Tuesday that nine students in the Zamboanga Peninsula hurdled its 2020-2021 Junior Level Science Scholarship (JLSS) program.

DOST-9 director Martin Wee, in a statement, said the JLSS program is intended for regular third year college students who are enrolled in priority science and technology (S&T) courses.

For this year, Wee said the DOST-SEI did not hold the yearly qualifying examination, instead, applicants were asked to submit documentary requirements including grades for the first two years of college, which underwent eligibility screening for several months.

The suspension of the face-to-face examination for the JLSS was due to the risks of the prevailing coronavirus pandemic, which led to the use of data analytics to finally identify the deserving students for the scholarship grant, Martin said.

They are Melanie Rose Tubil Cabual; Rizafel Joy Trinidad Cuenca; Kyra Maturan Helar; Fatima Raiza Bacareza Hussin; Ceasar Eugene Vincent Anastacio Jamanulla; Mattew Egua Luna; Adam Bayot Mapa II; Mat Christopher Perigo Pasgala; and, Ermeliza Antipuesto Ortiz.

The nine students were chosen from 123 qualified applicants from the region. A total of 785 qualified applicants nationwide were screened for the scholarship program.

Wee said the qualifiers will enjoy two to three years of scholarship benefits, which includes tuition subsidy, monthly stipend, book allowance, and others.

He said that the effectivity of scholarship grant is in the first semester of the academic year 2020-2021, which means scholars will receive the financial assistance for the previous months retroactively.

He said that each qualifier shall receive a notice of award stating the schedule of the orientation on scholarship policies and signing of the scholarship agreement, which must be attended by the qualifiers and their parents or legal guardian. (PNA)
