Baguio’s daily Covid-19 cases exceed 500

This city saw another single-day record in new coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases, with 529 infections logged on Thursday.

Based on the latest Covid-19 bulletin of the Department of Health-Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) released on Thursday night, the figure already breached the local government’s highest estimated projection of 500 and the 411 new cases recorded on Sept. 19, 2021, during the height of the Delta variant surge.

Thursday’s new infections are also higher than 374 new cases recorded in the city on Wednesday. This brought the city’s active case tally to 2,067.

Mayor Benjamin Magalong, in a media interview, bared projections that the city’s cases will reach a peak of 500 cases daily amid the new wave were believed to be caused by the Omicron variant.

This just came a week after the city’s Health Services Office said it expects around 250 to 300 daily cases.

As of Thursday, CAR has 3,387 active cases with 931 new infections.

For provinces placed under Alert Level 3, Benguet topped the number of new cases at 224; followed by Kalinga with 95 and Abra with two.

Meanwhile, Apayao logged 40 new cases, followed by Mountain Province with 37 and Ifugao with four.

In terms of Hospital Care Utilization Rate, Apayao logged the highest at 97.56 percent, followed by Ifugao with 92 percent; Mountain Province, 90.38 percent; Baguio City, 89.62 percent; Benguet, 84.62 percent; Kalinga, 60.94 percent and Abra, 12.50 percent.

The DOH-CAR also reported that the current surge in new Covid-19 cases gives the region a two-week growth rate of 2,348 percent and an average daily attack rate of 6.33 percent, based on data as of January 10.
