Hazardous red tide still up in Surigao Sur town bay

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) 13 (Caraga) has continued to warn the public of the dangers of consuming shellfish from Lianga Bay in Surigao del Sur as the area is still affected by red tide.

In a statement Wednesday, BFAR-13 said Lianga Bay is among the eight areas in the country that continue to test positive for paralytic shellfish poison (PSP), commonly known as red tide.

Based on its Shellfish Bulletin 23, the PSP or toxic red tide in Lianga Bay is beyond the regulatory limit.

“All types of shellfish and Acetes sp. or alamang gathered from the area are not safe for human consumption,” the bulletin read.

However, fish, squid, shrimp, and crabs gathered from Lianga Bay are still safe for human consumption, provided they are fresh and washed thoroughly, and internal organs, such as gills and intestines, are removed before cooking, the advisory added.
