LTO-7 offers free internet at Cebu City office

CEBU CITY – The public can now avail of the free high-speed internet at the Land Transportation Office in Central Visayas’ (LTO-7) Malasakit Lounge on N. Bacalso Avenue here, the regional office announced on Monday.

This, after the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) completed the installation of internet service at the government office.

In September last year, LTO-7 Director Victor Emmanuel Caindec and DICT Secretary Gregorio Honasan II signed a memorandum of agreement between the two agencies to provide better services to the public.

DICT, which is currently implementing the Government Network (GovNet) program, aims to help address the basic needs of the government for transparency, efficiency, and effective governance through information and communications technology.

GovNet is a broadband network of state agencies working in harmony to better serve the Filipino people and enhance the country’s international competitiveness in e-government.

Under the agreement, DICT would provide up to one gigabit (Gbps) connection access to the GovNet network of LTO-7.

“We have tested the speed and it is incredible, our transacting public or anyone who needs an internet connection can connect to the available WiFi with a 500 mbps speed,” Caindec said in a statement.

DICT has provided LTO-7 with two service providers for the high-speed connection, one for public to use while the other is dedicated for the employees.

“As I have mentioned in the past, this partnership is significant to LTO’s Management Information System. Through this, we can have a faster and integrated network in a way we can deliver fast services to the public,” Caindec said.

The director also thanked Honasan and DICT Visayas Cluster 2 officer in charge Director Frederick Amores for giving priority to the connection infrastructure of LTO’s first-ever Malasakit Lounge in the country, which is dedicated to the special sector including senior citizens, persons with disability, pregnant and nursing women, and overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

“We are proud to say that we have the first LTO Malasakit Service Center with an amazing high-speed internet that is open to all,” he noted.

LTO-7 Malasakit Center has the full capacity of services such as licensing services, the Drivers Education Center, a legal research library, and an e-learning portal.

According to DICT, the main benefit of GovNet to government agencies is lower costs of internet services and faster data transfers for government-to-government communications.

GovNet is part of the E-Government Master Plan of the DICT which aims to build the fiber-to-the-building connection for government agencies, schools, local government units, and hospitals in Metro Manila and Metro Cebu
