The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) here reported on Monday that the number of registrants to the government’s Philippine Identification System (PhilSys) in Negros Oriental has already reached 78 percent of the target for this year.
PSA-Negros Oriental chief Engr. Ariel Fortuito said in an interview the number of registrants increased after they brought the list-up activities to the barangays to allow more residents to register, especially those who could not go to the regular on-site registration centers amid the coronavirus disease 19 (Covid-19) pandemic.
As of Sept. 11, the PSA here reported a total of 672,827 registrants from the six cities and 19 municipalities of Negros Oriental to the national identification system.
This represents 78 percent of the total target of 854,257 individuals to be registered until the end of this year, Fortuito said.
The PSA here has been conducting satellite registrations in certain barangays for about a month now to provide an opportunity for those restricted by Covid-19 quarantine regulations to leave their homes, he said.
On-site registration at the City Mall, the local Robinsons mall, and the Lorenzo Building in this capital city are also continuing with the list-up, as well as other designated centers in the different local government units, Fortuito said.
Also, the PSA-Dumaguete continues satellite registrations for institutions that make special arrangements or requests with them, he added.
Signed into law by President Rodrigo R. Duterte in August 2018, Republic Act 11055, or the Philippine Identification System Act, aims to establish a single national ID for all Filipinos and resident aliens.
The national ID will be a valid proof of identity that shall be a means of simplifying public and private transactions, enrollment in schools, and the opening of bank accounts.
It will also boost efficiency, especially in dealing with government services where people will only need to present one ID during transactions.
