Nat’l ID registrants in NegOr reach over 800K

At least 833,474 residents in Negros Oriental have completed the Step 2 registration process for the Philippine Identification System (PhilSys), the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) in the province said.

Engr. Ariel Fortuito, PSA-Negros Oriental chief, said in an interview on Monday that the number of registrants as of December 12 represents 96.57 percent of their target of 854,257 for this year.

This means that there remain 20,793 individuals for registration until the end of this month, he noted.

Fortuito is optimistic they will reach the target on or before December 31.

The top five areas in the province with the highest number of registrants are Dumaguete City, 83,245; Bayawan City, 71,908; Guihulngan City, 64,209; Tanjay City, 55,451; and Bais City, 49,299.

Signed into law by President Rodrigo R. Duterte in August 2018, Republic Act 11055 or the Philippine Identification System Act aims to establish a single national ID for all Filipinos and resident aliens.

The national ID will be a valid proof of identity that shall be a means of simplifying public and private transactions, enrollment in schools, and the opening of bank accounts.

It will also boost efficiency, especially in dealing with government services where people will only need to present one ID during transactions.
