PH logs 32,246 new coronavirus infections, 5,063 recoveries

The Philippines logged 32,246 new coronavirus infections and 5,063 recoveries Wednesday.

The latest Covid-19 bulletin showed that there are 208,164 active cases while total recoveries rose to 2,797,816, or 91.5 percent of 3,058,634 infections since the pandemic started in March 2020.

Wednesday’s tally of fresh cases is higher than Tuesday’s 28,007.

Out of the active cases, 197,091 are mild, 2,872 are moderate, 6,435 are asymptomatic, 1,468 are severe, and 298 are critical.

“Of the 32,246 reported cases today, 31,793 (99 percent) occurred within the recent 14 days – Dec. 30, 2021 to Jan. 12, 2022,” the Department of Health said.

The regions with the most cases in the recent two weeks were the National Capital Region (NCR) with 17,902 or 56 percent of new infections; Region 4-A (Calabarzon), 6,838 or 22 percent; and Central Luzon, 3,268 or 10 percent.

The death toll is now 52,654 with 144 new deaths, representing 1.72 percent of overall cases.

“Of the 144 deaths, 20 occurred in January 2022 (14 percent), 8 in September 2021 (6 percent), 31 in August 2021 (22 percent), 8 in July 2021 (6 percent), 3 in June 2021 (2 percent), 13 in May 2021 (9 percent), 38 in April 2021 (26 percent), 16 in March 2021 (11 percent), 5 in February 2021 (3 percent), and 2 in January 2021 (1 percent) due to the late encoding of death information to COVIDKaya,” the DOH said.

About 45.7 percent of 63,903 who were tested according to the January 10 data turned out positive for Covid-19.

“Eighty-five duplicates were removed from the total case count as 67 of these are recoveries and one is a death,” the DOH said.

Meanwhile, 125 cases previously tagged as recoveries were reclassified as deaths after validation.

All laboratories were operational on January 10 but 11 were not able to submit their data to the Covid-19 Document Repository System.

The DOH said the 11 laboratories contribute, on average, 3.3 percent of samples tested, and 4.5 percent among positive individuals based on data in the past 14 days.

To date, 43 percent of 3,400 intensive care unit (ICU) beds, 45 percent of 20,000 isolation beds, 43 percent of 13,400 ward beds, and 18 percent of 3,100 ventilators are used by patients with Covid-19 nationwide.

Meanwhile, 56 percent of 1,100 ICU beds, 55 percent of 4,800 isolation beds, 67 percent of 4,400 ward beds, and 24 percent of 1,100 ventilators dedicated to patients with Covid-19 are in use in the NCR.
