PNP logs 3 Delta variant cases

Three police officers were confirmed to be infected with the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) Delta variant, a ranking police official said on Thursday night.

In a message, PNP deputy chief for administration and Administrative Support For Covid-19 Task Force (ASCOTF) commander, Lt. Gen. Joselito Vera Cruz said the three who tested positive for Covid-19 last July were immediately placed under a 14-day quarantine.

“They were tested Covid-19 positive last July and had finished their 14-day isolation. However, the results of their genome sequencing were only released this August (so) they were directed to immediately undergo RT PCR (reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction) test again by DOH (Department of Health),” Vera Cruz said.

He added that one of the three police officers contracted Covid-19 again and is now admitted in an isolation facility operated by a local government unit.

Meanwhile, one of them tested negative and is now on home quarantine while waiting for the results of another swab test on August 12.

“The other one is still awaiting the result of his RT PCR and also on home quarantine,” Vera Cruz added.

As of Thursday night, Covid-19 infections in the police force have reached a total of 32,077.

Another 184 police officers recovered from the disease, raising the recovery count to 30,147.

Some 158 new infections were also reported, bringing the active case tally to 1,868.

The death toll has reached 89 with one new fatality.

On August 1, the patient was admitted to a hospital after experiencing headache and cough. He underwent swab test which yielded a positive result.

On August 7, he was hooked to oxygen inhalation due to difficulty of breathing. He died on August 9.

Of the fatalities, 61 percent are aged 46 to 55; 31 percent are aged 36 to 45; 5 percent are aged 26 to 35; and 3 percent are between 56 to 65 years old.

Vera Cruz said 90 percent of PNP’s casualties were unvaccinated against Covid-19 while five only received one dose.

So far, the DOH has detected 627 Delta variant cases in the country with 13 deaths.
