Stricter checkpoints up after Lanao cop’s ambush in Maguindanao

Stricter inspection at checkpoints across the province is implemented after unidentified gunmen on a motorbike shot dead in an ambush an off-duty police officer along the section of the highway here on Thursday morning.

In a report, Lt. Rey Samson, town police chief, said the incident occurred along Barangay Kauran shortly before lunch.

Samson identified the victim as Cpl. Henry Mangaser Olindo Jr., a member of the municipal police force in Lumbatan, Lanao del Sur.

“The victim was riding a motorcycle on his way to the town proper of Esperanza, Sultan Kudarat when gunmen aboard a separate motorbike shot him from behind,” Samson said.

Olindo, 44, of Cotabato City, died on the spot of multiple gunshot wounds.

The gunmen sped off to an unknown direction in Maguindanao following the incident, police investigators, quoting witnesses, said.

Police found at least four empty shells for a .45-caliber pistol at the crime scene.

As of this posting, Samson said investigators remained clueless on the motive and identities of the attackers.
