10 construction workers injured in Bataan mishap

Ten construction workers were injured when the dump truck they were riding reportedly lost its brake while descending a steep portion of the Governor Jose Linao Road here on Wednesday.

Capt. Gerald Quiambao, Bagac police chief, said the truck was loaded with 21 workers and being driven by painter Marvin Campano when its brakes malfunctioned upon reaching Barangay Atilano Ricardo in this town.

The vehicle rammed into electric posts along the road, resulting in injuries to some of the passengers who were rushed to the Bagac Medicare Hospital and Bataan General Hospital in Balanga City.

Bagac municipal administrator Nick Ancheta said personnel of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office, Bagac Municipal Police Station, and Bureau of Fire Protection rushed to the site of the accident to assist the injured workers.

“Maswerte at walang gaanong seryosong nangyari at mga pilay lamang ang natamo ng ilan sa mga ito. Nagkatakot pa ang mga nagrerescue dahil nang lapitan nila ang mga ito ay puro itim ang mukha, iyon pala ay natapunan ng pintura (It was fortunate that nothing serious happened and some of them only suffered sprains. The rescuers got scared because when they approached the victims, their faces were black because of paint that spilled over),” Ancheta said.

Apple Vanzuela, the owner of the dump truck, said it was good that the driver did not lose his presence of mind and was able to maneuver the truck and merely hit the posts.

Of the 10 injured, she said two suffered sprains on the hands and feet and had to be sent to the Jose B. Lingad Memorial Hospital in San Fernando City, Pampanga, and one to the Bataan General Hospital.

The workers came from Barangay Nagwaling, Pilar town and were headed to their construction site at a resort in Bagac when the accident happened.
