A female New People’s Army (NPA) rebel wanted for multiple frustrated murder was arrested by the police and military operatives in Surigao del Sur.
In a statement, Army’s 4th Infantry Division (4ID) Wednesday identified the suspect as Jemalyn P. Calinawan, of Barangay Adlay, Carrascal town.
Maj. Gen. Wilbur Mamawag, 4ID commander, said Calinawan was nabbed inside her home by a police and military team on April 7 through an arrest warrant issued by a regional court in Surigao City.
“Calinawan is a member of CTG (communist terrorist group) operating in the provinces of Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur,” Mamawag said.
The arrest, he said, manifested the government’s commitment to run after the remnants of the NPA insurgents in the area, particularly those responsible for extortion activities and have pending criminal charges.
“We will push harder with our campaign to end this insurgency before the term of President Rodrigo Duterte ends,” Mamawag said.
On Monday, police and military operatives also arrested Julita Galario Domingo, the secretary and finance officer of a unit belonging to the NPA’s North Central Mindanao Regional Committee operating in Agusan del Sur.
The Communist Party of the Philippines-NPA is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the Philippines.
The National Democratic Front has been formally designated as a terrorist organization by the Anti-Terrorism Council on June 23, 2021, citing it as “an integral and inseparable part” of the CPP-NPA created in April 1973.
