Eastern Samar guv seeks lower jeepney, bus fare

Eastern Samar Governor Ben Evardone is asking the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to review the fare rates currently being implemented by operators and drivers of public utility jeepneys and buses in the province.

The provincial government announced on Thursday night that Evardone sent a letter to LTFRB Chairman Martin Delgra III, informing him that the province is already under Alert Level 1 from April 16 to April 30, 2022, allowing public utility vehicles to operate at full seating capacity.

Evardone emphasized that despite the full operation, jeepneys and buses in the province still impose high fare rates or rates applicable only during periods when seating capacity is regulated to 50 percent or 70 percent.

For instance, the fare from Borongan City to the town of Sulat ( a distance of 39 kilometers), jeepney fare rose to PHP200 from PHP60 before the pandemic.

“We would like the LTFRB to look into our situation and help us address the plea of commuters in our province. The high fare rates become a burden for commuters especially the students and teachers who are now reporting to schools due to the implementation of limited face-to-face classes,” Evardone said.

The governor sent the letter dated April 22, 2022, to LTFRB through Regional Director Gualberto Gualberto.
