256K Metro Manila Transport Workers Receive Fuel Cash Assistance

Metro manila: More than 256,000 transport workers in Metro Manila have received PHP5,000 cash assistance each as part of the government's fuel subsidy program, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. announced during a national address.

According to Philippines News Agency, the President detailed that an additional PHP1.28 billion has been allocated for this program, with a nationwide distribution set to commence on April 6. This fuel subsidy initiative is part of the government's strategy to address rising global oil prices, which have been influenced by tensions in the Middle East.

The government has earmarked a total of PHP2.5 billion in fuel subsidies, aiming to support over 1.4 million drivers and operators across the country. So far, PHP300 million has been distributed to various beneficiaries, including public utility drivers and transport operators.

In addition to financial aid, the government is implementing measures to alleviate the burden on commuters and the transport sector. These measures include a 50 percent fare discount on Metro Rail Transit 3 and Light Rail Transit 2, benefiting over 12 million passengers. The 'Libreng Sakay' programs have also been expanded in Metro Manila, Metro Cebu, and Metro Davao.

Moreover, toll discounts are being offered to jeepneys, buses, and food transport vehicles on major expressways like the North Luzon Expressway and South Luzon Expressway, and STAR Toll. Starting April 15, a PHP1 roll-on/roll-off (RORO) terminal fee will be introduced for vehicles transporting agricultural products, aiming to reduce logistics costs and stabilize food prices.
