5 nabbed as cops foil kidnap of Malaysian in Tarlac

Police officers in Tarlac province have foiled an attempted kidnapping of a Malaysian national by five suspects early Wednesday.

In a statement Thursday, Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr. identified the suspects as Carmelito de la Cruz, 58; Alexander Sumagay, 40; John Rey Valderama, 26, and Obet Endrada Tobias, 40, all Filipinos; and Der Jien Chiw, 33, a Malaysian national.

Reports reaching the PNP Command Center in Camp Crame said the victim whose identity was withheld was driving his vehicle at around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday when he was suddenly blocked by the vehicle boarded by the suspects.

The initial investigation further revealed the suspects forcibly entered the victim’s vehicle and tried to abduct the victim.

However, on-duty security guards of the establishment where the victim works noticed the commotion and immediately called the assistance of Bamban Municipal Police Station in Tarlac.

“Due to swift action of our PNP personnel, the victim was successfully rescued and the five suspects were apprehended. The PNP will conduct further investigation to verify the motive and involvement of arrested personalities,” Azurin said.

The arrested suspects are now under the custody of the police for investigation and proper disposition.
