64 Filipinos affected by Ottawa tornadoes get aid

MANILA The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) released about PHP670,000 to assist overseas Filipinos affected by tornadoes that hit Canada last September, Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary Elmer Cato said Friday.

"Sixty-four affected overseas Filipinos received USD200 each, with a total value of PHP670,000," he told the Philippine News Agency (PNA).

The Philippine Embassy in Ottawa confirmed through a letter dated Dec. 5 the disbursement of financial assistance.

According to Ambassador in Ottawa Petronila Garcia, the recipients were those who requested financial aid on or before October 31.

Garcia said the embassy will not be able to process requests submitted after October 31.

"We shall, however, remain ready to facilitate the processing of consular documents, which may have been lost or destroyed by the tornadoes," the envoy noted.

Tornadoes tore through the Ottawa-Gatineau region on September 21. No death was reported but more than a dozen were injured. (PNA)
