8 killed as truck falls off ravine in Zambo Sur

Eight construction workers were killed while eight others were wounded when the truck they were riding fell off a ravine in the province of Zamboanga del Sur, the police reported Monday.

Maj. Helen Galvez, Police Regional Office-9 (PRO-9) information officer, said the accident happened around 2:15 p.m. Sunday at Purok 1, Barangay Liguac, Pitogo, Zamboanga del Sur.

Galvez identified the fatalities as Rey Alfornon, 24; Orlando Sabejon, 44; Noel Cabellon, 19; Berlindo Labador, 34; Edwin Delos Santos, 70; Marvin Hemang, 30; Loui Jay Omandam, 34, and Ranniel Ermac,15.

The other eight victims, who were injured, were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Investigation showed the victims were aboard a truck driven by Leolito Tam, 28, that fell into a ravine due to brake failure. The driver was unscathed.

Galvez said investigation further showed that the truck was loaded with timbers to be used as a boat-hull at the time of the accident.
