MANILA-- President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday said he will appoint Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff Eduardo M. AAo as the next Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary, ending weeks of speculation following the sacking of Ismael Sueno from the post in early April.
Duterte made the announcement during departure rites at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport before flying to Cambodia for the World Economic Forum (WEF) on ASEAN.
This after reporters pressed the President if he is looking over the possibility of appointing losing candidates in the May elections to his Cabinet following the expiration of the one year appointment ban.
President Duterte then asked AAo to step forward and face the media.
"You are facing the next DILG Secretary," Duterte said.
The President said he needs AAo at the helm of the DILG to address the problems regarding the Philippine National Police (PNP), terrorism and drugs.
Kailangan ko kasi I have a problem with the police. And then we have a problem with terrorism. What looms very big ahead is the IS. They are coming in bakbakan tayo sa Mindanao ngayon. And I'd like you to know, that itong droga wala itong katapusan," Duterte said.
With Gen. Roy Cimatu as the new Acting Environment Secretary, coupled with the impending appointment of AAo to the DILG, the President joked that one more general in the Cabinet would already complete a junta.
"May isang bakante pa, madagdagan ko pa ng isang military, kumpleto na 'yung junta natin. Hindi na sila kailangan mag-coup d'etat eh nandiyan na kayo, kayo na," Duterte said.
