The 4th Asian Tourism Fair (ATF) begins at the International Convention City at Bashundhara in the capital on Thursday.
The three-day fair will be held from August 27 to August 29. Monthly magazine ‘Parjatan Bichitra’ will organise the event in cooperation with the Bangladesh Tourism Board (BTB) and the Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation (BPC).
Bangladesh is the host country while India, Nepal, Bhutan, China, the Philippines, Uzbekistan and Singapore will participate in the fair.
Civil Aviation and Tourism minister Rashed Khan Menon will formally inaugurate the fair on August 27.
Editor of Parjatan Bichitra Mohiuddin Helal said they will showcase tourism services in different beautiful places in Bangladesh and other Asian countries.
Mr Helal said Bangladesh will be able to attract the overseas tourists to visit and enjoy the unexplored natural beauty of the country through this festival.
Besides, there will be several discount offers on travel, hotel or package booking in the fair for the upcoming tourism season.
The participants will include tour operators, hotels, motels, airlines, resorts, travel shops, theme parks, etc.
Aparup Chowdhury, chairman of BPC, said the tourism sector incurred losses due to political turmoil last year. “We hope we will be able to recover the losses this year”, he hoped.
He said the government has declared 2016 as Tourism Year. It has taken different programmes which will be continued over three years.
The BPC chairman also said community and eco-tourism should be promoted to keep bio-diversity safe from threat.
Akhtaruzzaman Khan Kabir, chief executive officer of BTB and Francis De Silva, expert of the ILO, among others were present.
