The European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines Southern Mindanao Business Council (ECCP SMBC) said Wednesday the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Investment Conference (BARMM IC) has been canceled.
In a press briefing here, ECCP SMBC executive director Antonio Peralta said they decided to cancel the March 31 BARMM business conference because of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid 19).
Peralta said the event is being moved to a later date.
"We are expecting a good number of EU businesses attending but we decided to defer the event because of the Covid 19," he said, adding the expected participants include several European investors with established businesses in Manila who want to expand in Mindanao.
Peralta said their decision came after Mayor Sara Z. Duterte canceled all major activities lined up for the 83rd Araw ng Dabaw celebration next month as a precautionary measure to prevent the possible spread of the deadly virus in the city.
"We heed the call of the Mayor to slow down on conferences like this," he said, adding it was done in consultation with the European Embassy in Manila.
Meanwhile, Peralta said that the EU has great interests in Mindanao, especially on agriculture. The BARMM business event, he said, even managed to draw in eight ambassadors and three trade attaches to the conference.
"They even lobbied to Mayor Sara on the lifting of martial law, which was their main concern," he said.
