MANILA-- Some of the contestants of Miss Universe 2016 to be held in Manila early next year have a taste of local delicacies during their half-day tour of the historic Intramuros or the "Walled City" in the City of Manila.
The 11 candidates mostly from Asia visited the Manila Hotel after which they proceeded to Light and Sound museum inside the Walled City, where they experienced the condensed chapter of Filipino history with the realism of light and sound.
The less than an hour presentation features the history of Intramuros and Jose Rizal's Bagumbayan.
From the museum, they rode the Intramurostranvia that took them to the Christmas Bazaar, which is several minutes away, where they were welcomed with regional performance.
The beauty queens from the host country Philippines, Malaysia, China, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand, Korea, Myanmar, Vietnam, New Zealand and United States also visited the Christmas bazaar where they were offered some local delicacies such as "putobumbong" and "bibingka", usually served during "simbanggabi", and the usual Filipino snacks banana cue, turon, maruya, among others.
After eating their afternoon snacks, the beauty queens took pictures riding the "Kalesas", Filipino version of horse-drawn carriage.
They also drank fresh coconut juice at the floating restaurant beside the Quirino Grandstand before proceeding to their last event in Manila.
Capping their day in the capital city was the visit to the monument of the country's national hero, Jose Rizal at the Luneta Park, where they lay a wreath.
The 11 Miss Universe contestants were accompanied by Department of Tourism (DoT) Secretary Wanda Teo, Executive Director Penelope Belmonte, and Undersecretary Kat de Castro.
The ladies are in the country for the kick off ceremony of the pageant held over the weekend.
The Miss Universe 2016 pageant night will be held on January 30, 3017 (Philippine Time) at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
