Comelec eyes printing 18-M more ballots before Lenten break

MANILA The Commission on Elections (Comelec) may print the additional 18 million ballots to be used in the May 14 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) polls before the Holy Week.

We are thinking of starting the printing of the 18 million ballots very soon. These will be done before the Holy Week, said Comelec spokesman, James Jimenez, in an interview Friday.

Jimenez said they expect to finish the printing process in less than a month.

It is estimated to take about 20 days, he said, adding that the poll body is not discounting the possibility of working during the Holy Week if they need to.

We will try not to work on Holy Week. But if the schedule calls for it, that possibility might be considered, Jimenez said.

The ballots to be printed are for those who registered from Nov. 6 to Nov. 30 last year, as well as for those in Mindanao.

The poll body has already printed 59,578,346 official ballots for the National Capital Region (NCR), Luzon and Visayas before the holding of the Oct. 23, 2017 polls, which was postponed to May this year.

Comelec Resolution No. 10248 states that the printed ballots are set to be used in the forthcoming polls.
