DA works for revival of the Philippine Abaca

Agriculture Secretary Manny F. PiAol awards to the Sogod Municipal Government, represented by Mayor Imelda U. Tan, P50 million in funds to be used for an abaca nursery project, which aims to produce abaca suckers that will be dispersed in the whole of Region VIII.

Under the supervision and close monitoring of the Department of Agriculture and the Philippine Fiber Development Authority (PhilFida), Sogod will produce healthy abaca plants, to be distributed to other municipalities.

"This is part of the national plan of the government to revive the industry and address the shortage of abaca in the world market. We are looking at expanding production areas by 500 hectares per region, "PiAol stressed.

"For your information, the money has been deposited to the account of Sogod LGU, so this is really happening," he added during the ceremonial turn-over of check held at Borongan, Eastern Samar on September 16, 2016.

The Sogod Bay area in Southern Leyte is home to hectares of abaca before it was wiped-out by the bunchy top virus in the early 2000s.

Witnessing the turnover were DA-VIII Director Wilson Cerbito and PhilFida OIC-Director Victor Prodigo.
