CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY-- The provincial government of Lanao del Norte on Tuesday announced it will proceed with the holding of a Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) game in Tubod, the province's capital town, saying that the killing of Dr. Dreyfuss Perlas was an "isolated case."
Lanao del Norte Governor Imelda Quibranza-Dimaporo said she ordered a probe into the killing of Perlas, a volunteer doctor "loved by the people of the province's hinterland villages" for bringing medical services to the poor residents of Lanao Del Norte.
Perlas, 31, was gunned down by two motorcycle-riding men in the village of Maranding Annex in the town of Kapatagan while on his way home last Wednesday night after a medical mission in Sapad, another town in Lanao Del Norte.
In 2012, Perlas started working in Lanao del Norte as a volunteer under the government's "Doctors to the Barrios" (DTTB) program before he was hired as the municipal doctor of Sapad last year.
Quibranza-Dimaporo said she asked Police Sr. Supt. Faro Antonio Olaguera, the provincial police chief of Lanao Del Norte, to form a special task force, consisting of the police chiefs of Kapatagan, Lala, and Sapad, that would work on solving the Perlas case.
While the province condoled with the Perlas family for the unfortunate incident, the provincial government will proceed with the scheduled PBA game on March 25, Quibranza-Dimaporo said.
According to Quibranza-Dimaporo, the murder of Perlas was an "isolated case" and that Lanao Del Norte "remains a peaceful place."
She said that people "need not worry about the peace and order situation in the province."
The PBA game will be held at the province's Mindanao Civic Center Sports Complex in Tubod town.
