CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga: The Department of Science and Technology (DOST), in partnership with the Pampanga State Agricultural University (PSAU), is developing a research project that could help boost this province's sampaguita industry.
Vice Governor Lilia Pineda met with officials of the DOST and PSAU on Monday to discuss the exploration of other products that can be commercialized using the sampaguita flower.
Among the possible products include Sampaguita tea which was presented to the vice governor. She noted in a statement on Tuesday that Governor Dennis Pineda fully supports the study and initiative that could provide additional income to the growers of the Philippine national flower in this province.
“Mas maraming Kapampangan pa ang makinabang sa mga livelihood programs na pwedeng magawa rito (There are more Kapampangans who stand to benefit from the livelihood programs that could be developed from the project),” the vice governor said.
Sampaguita thrives in the towns of Lubao, Guagua and Floridablanca.
Since 2017, the provincial government of Pampanga, in collaboration with the DOST, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), has been helping to boost the sampaguita industry in terms of financial and training.
Pineda said the provincial government assisted the marginalized farmers in funding the expenses for planting sampaguita, particularly the purchase of pesticides and fertilizers that could enhance its productivity
