The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), said Saturday that it has already prepositioned goods worth Php 8,057,660.69 in 25 local government units (LGUs) to prepare for the possible onslaught of typhoon 'Nina.'
The prepositioning of these goods comprising of food and non-food items was done through its field office (FO) in Region V.
The Welfare Department also said that it was currently maintaining a total of 571,707 family food packs (FFPs) prepositioned in strategic locations around the country so that it can be easily distributed to possible affected families and individuals.
In addition, the DSWD Central Office (CO), its FOs and the National Resource Operations Center (NROC) have a total stockpile and standby funds amounting to Php 875,350,057.69 for distribution to areas that will be affected by the typhoon.
Meanwhile, DSWD Secretary Judy M. Taguiwalo reiterates her call to the public to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures, especially those returning to their respective provinces for the holiday season.
At the same time, Taguiwalo said that its Disaster Response Assistance and Management Bureau (DReAMB) was placed under red alert status in preparation for the typhoon's possible impact to the areas under its track.
The red alert status was raised as "Nina" intensified into a typhoon.
"Our Quick Response Teams (QRTs) are now on standby and are monitoring the situation of the areas under the typhoon's tracks. The NDRRMC Response Cluster is also on red alert to prepare for Nina's possible damages," said Taguiwalo.
Taguiwalo added that while this is the day wherein most of the citizens of the country are now busy preparing for their Noche Buena feasts, there is still a need for the public to be prepare also for the possible onslaught of the typhoon.
"We reiterate our call to the public to also prepare for the possible onslaught of the typhoon and to strengthen their coordination with their local disaster agencies," she said.
She also reminded that in times of typhoon there is need to prioritize the safety and security of all, especially vulnerable children, pregnant women, PWDs and senior citizens.
