Antique: The Department of Social Welfare and Development in Western Visayas (DSWD 6) has distributed Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS) and food packs to 92 former rebels in Antique. This initiative coincided with a two-day provincial peace summit held in the municipality of Sibalom.
According to Philippines News Agency, DSWD 6 Protective Services Division officer-in-charge Rhea Baclay Valdellon emphasized the department's commitment to supporting provincial government initiatives aimed at fostering lasting peace within the community. Each former rebel received PHP5,000 alongside food packs designed to last for a week.
Regional Adviser for Peace and Security in Region 6, Major Gen. Rene Glen Paje, reiterated the government's ongoing support for former rebels, encouraging their continued journey towards peace. He highlighted the significance of their decision to rejoin the government as a step towards unity, peace, and a brighter future.
Ka Carol, a 60-year-old from the municipality of Culasi, expressed gratitude for the government's assistance. Having surrendered in 2021 after nearly a decade with the New People's Army-Communist Party of the Philippines (NPA-CPP), she shared how the peace summit reinforced her decision to surrender and reunite with her family.
The summit featured a symbolic walk for peace, candle lighting, and a prayer for peace, along with an orientation on available government programs and services. Former rebels also signed a memorandum of agreement with government agencies to sustain peace. Additional services included a medical mission by the Integrated Provincial Health Office and free haircuts provided by the Philippine Army.
The event was organized by the Antique provincial government through the Antique Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office and the Provincial Peace and Public Safety Office.
