Staying true to its commitment of continuously enhancing Employees' Compensation Program benefits and services, the Employees' Compensation Commission (ECC) recently passed a resolution approving an increase in EC funeral benefit from P20,000 to P30,000.
"This move is part of ECC's commitment of continually enhancing and equalizing EC benefits to make it sufficient and relevant, taking into consideration changes in consumer prices and income," Employees' Compensation Commission Executive Director Stella Zipagan-Banawis said.
The resolution granting the increase has been transmitted to the Office of the President for approval.
The funeral benefit under the public sector was pegged to P3,000 since 1987. It was successfully equalized with the private sector at P10,000 in 2013 and increased to P20,000 for both public and private sectors in 2014.
In June 2016, the ECC also approved the increase in the EC funeral benefits for the private sector workers and submitted the same for the approval of the Office of the President.
The said increase will not entail any increase in the EC premium contribution and will not impair the viability of the State Insurance Fund as it can last up to 2061 even after implementing the increase in EC funeral benefit.
From 2011-2015, there were 692 EC funeral benefit claims approved for the public sector with total payments amounting to P12.1 million.
