ERC Approves Transmission Connection for Alternergy’s Tanay Wind Project to Luzon Grid

Manila: Alternergy’s 128-megawatt (MW) wind power project in Tanay, Rizal has received approval from the Energy Regulatory Commission, enhancing the capacity of the Luzon grid.

According to Philippines News Agency, Alternergy Tanay Wind Corporation (ATWC), a subsidiary of publicly-listed Alternergy Holdings Corporation (ALTER), announced that it has been granted authorization to develop and own a dedicated point-to-point transmission facility. The approval facilitates the construction of two double circuit, 500 kV transmission lines and a 500 kV switchyard with a 1 x150 MVA transformer, with an estimated cost of around PHP2.8 billion.

The approval also encompasses ATWC’s two-stage interconnection scheme, which includes an interim and a final connection. The interim connection scheme involves a bus-in connection to the existing 500 kV San Jose-Tayabas transmission backbone of the Luzon Grid. This is in place pending the completion of the proposed Baras 500 kV Substation by the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), which will serve as the final connection scheme.

ATWC president Gerry Magbanua commented on the development, stating that the innovative interconnection scheme allows the Tanay Wind Power Project to fulfill its commitment under the Administration’s Green Energy Auction 2 (GEA 2). Magbanua expressed gratitude for NGCP’s collaboration in ensuring the timely dispatch of green power to the grid while the final connection scheme is being completed.

This recent approval follows the ERC’s earlier approval of Alternergy’s Alabat Wind Power project in Quezon province. Magbanua highlighted that the support from NGCP and ERC for the interconnection schemes of both the Tanay and Alabat Wind Power Projects showcases Alternergy’s ability to design innovative solutions for critical transmission access in renewable energy infrastructure.
