MANILA-- The Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) and SM Entertainment will launch "Cine Lokal" at the SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City on Wednesday, with President Rodrigo Duterte as guest of honor.
Cine Lokal is a partnership between the FDCP and SM Entertainment, with eight commercial theaters to be dedicated for the exclusive screening of FDCP-curated independent and award-winning films.
In a statement, FDCP chairperson and CEO Liza DiAo said the President's attendance to the event shows the government's commitment to the development of the local film industry.
"We are beyond honored and grateful for this show of support by no less than our President. This reaffirms the government's support for the development of the Philippine cinema. We are confident that Cine Lokal is just the start of the government and the film industry coming together to further cultivate a culture of film appreciation that goes beyond entertainment value," DiAo said, adding that this is in line with the President's vision of using culture and arts as key elements in nation-building.
For his part, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority general manager and Metro Manila Film Festival chairman, Thomas Orbos, expressed support for the FDCP initiative for independent film makers to commercialize their films.
"We support such endeavor that will also create a culture of support and viewership among Filipinos nationwide and at the same time, provide a venue for educational discourse for the youth and for our regional cinema," Orbos stated.
The FDCP will be programming content every month with a running theme to further encourage discourse among the audience.
For April, films for Salve Pelikula will be screened, among them "Spotlight", "Himala", "Iadya Mo Kami", and "Of Sinners and Saints".
Salve Pelikula will start on April 21 in Cine Lokal theaters.
