‘Floating’ Fertilizer in Ilocos Attributed to Misuse, Not Quality Issues: DA

Marcos: The Department of Agriculture (DA) clarified that the ‘insoluble and floating’ fertilizer depicted in a viral video from Marcos, Ilocos Norte, was a result of improper application, rather than any deficiencies in product quality.

According to Philippines News Agency, this clarification came after a validation and monitoring activity by the DA Regional Field Office-Ilocos, which took place from December 21 to 22. The investigation aimed to address concerns that had surfaced online regarding the quality of fertilizers distributed by the government.

In its statement, the DA sought to reassure the public about the integrity of government-procured inputs. The investigation revealed that the fertilizer in question, which was intended for basal application, had been mistakenly used as a side-dress. This method, combined with windy conditions, led to the granules remaining on the soil surface and being displaced, thus creating the false impression that the fertilizer was either insoluble or defective.

The fertilizer was identified as DANAT Complete Fertilizer (14-14-14), procured through the local government unit. The farmer involved in the incident was subsequently educated on the correct application process to prevent similar issues in the future.

The farmer expressed gratitude to the agency for its prompt response and assistance, later sharing a vlog to demonstrate the proper use of the DANAT Complete Fertilizer.

Meanwhile, the DA-Ilocos Region emphasized that all fertilizers distributed by the agency undergo rigorous quality testing, re-testing, and strict quality control procedures in DA laboratories and facilities accredited by the Fertilizer and Pesticide Authority.
