Health chief enjoins ordinary citizens to help prevent drug abuse

MANILA-- Health Secretary Dr. Paulyn Ubial said Tuesday every Filipino can take part in the efforts to address the drug menace in the country.

Citizens can actually play a big role, Ubial said during the #RealNumbersPH Forum held at Crowne Plaza Manila in Ortigas, Quezon City.

Everybody has to join the war (against hard drug trafficking) and has to promote (the) education of people on the ill effects of drugs," she said, citing the need for a strong information, education and communication campaign in all sectors, such as schools, churches, communities and even workplaces to deal with the problem.

During the forum, Ubial presented the health department's efforts on the rehabilitation of drug users, whom she acknowledged as victims who should be helped because drug abuse is also considered a mental health problem.

The forum, spearheaded by the Philippine National Police (PNP), Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), Department of Health (DOH) and Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in partnership with the Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO), was held to provide a closer and clearer look at the results of the government's operations against the drug menace.
