The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under 14 Football Festival was officially kicked-off yesterday afternoon with His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, the President of the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council and President of the National Football Association of Brunei Darussalam (NFABD), gracing the opening of the five-day tournament.
The ceremony took place at the Field and Track in Berakas. Accompanying His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah was Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Muda ‘Abdul ‘Aleem. Nine teams participate in the event representing Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, Laos, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Timor Leste.
His Royal Highness then consented to watch the opening game between the host team and the Philippines. Brunei Darussalam lost by 0-3 to the visitors.
Among the prominent spectators were Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Dr. Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong, the Minister of Education and Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Hazair bin Haji Abdullah, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports.
In another fixture, Vietnam clinched three points after beating Singapore 2-1. The Vietnamese scored the 1st goal in the 9th minute. Singapore equalised through a penalty kick in the 29th minute. Vietnam scored and retook the lead in the 51st minute. The score remained until the end of the match.
