Iligan City eyes improved ranking in ‘competitive index’

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY: The Iligan City government is targeting a better ranking in the annual Cities and Municipalities Competitive Index (CMCI) this year, an official said Monday.

Iligan City administrator Darwin Manubag said they have formed a City Competitiveness Committee (CCC) to review the documents and monitor the local government's compliance with the CMCI officials.

"Based on the evaluation, we have some problems in the submission of documents and their accuracy to the surveying team. They have noticed that there are non-complied items," he said in an interview.

Last year, Iligan City was at the bottom or 33rd in the urban cities category of CMCI. In 2021, the city was positioned at 32nd place. Forming the CCC will have an impact on the reports made to the CMCI secretariat, Manubag said.

"We can report that last year, we have a better business registry with 1,500 new businesses, and this will have an impact on our new economic dynamism," he added.

Glenn Villacin, executive director of the Iligan Investment and Incentives Promotion Center, said that around 80 percent of the CMCI requirements have been complied with under the new administration of Mayor Frederick Siao.

The remaining 20 percent is still being worked out by the CCC for submission before the Feb. 20 deadline.

Arnold Garbanzos, the public-private partnership director, said one of the indicators of the "highly competitive" city is the number of new investors coming in.

"The higher the rank (at CMCI), the more investors will come,“ he said. The CMCI secretariat is headed by the Department of Trade and Industry.

CMCI is a mechanism of rankings of local government units based on the total of five pillars: Economic Dynamism, Government Efficiency, Infrastructure, Resiliency, and Innovation.

Provincial rankings are based on population and income-weighted averages of the overall scores of cities and municipalities under a province
