Ilocos norte: In response to the escalating fuel prices, the provincial government of Ilocos Norte has taken steps to support tricycle drivers by distributing PHP2,500 in cash aid coupled with family food packs containing essential groceries.
According to Philippines News Agency, on Friday, cash aid was distributed to 929 eligible beneficiaries in the towns of Sarrat, Dingras, and Nueva Era. The distribution was led by Ilocos Norte Governor Cecilia Araneta-Marcos, who reassured the affected transport groups that the provincial government is actively handling the situation and prioritizing the needs of the most vulnerable sectors. Araneta-Marcos emphasized the continuation of the fuel assistance program for the public transport sector and expressed hope for an end to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has affected fuel prices globally.
To further alleviate the impact on affected sectors, the provincial government is engaging with various towns and cities to ensure the consistent distribution of cash assistance and food supplies. Approximately 14,000 tricycle operators and drivers across the province are eligible for the ongoing cash assistance program. However, some are still in the process of submitting the necessary documentation to receive their aid.
Nueva Era Municipal Mayor Aldrin Garvida extended gratitude to the provincial government on behalf of the beneficiaries, acknowledging the significant support provided by the fuel subsidy program. He remarked that such support bolsters the resilience of residents, particularly those contributing to the municipality's growth and development.
In addition to immediate financial assistance, the provincial government is focusing on reducing the province's dependency on fossil fuels. On March 16, Ilocos Norte will launch its first solar rooftop project in partnership with the private sector. This initiative aims to make solar energy more accessible and affordable for Ilocano families and businesses through a pilot rooftop and net-metering program.
